Thalagavara Narayanarao Seetharam (born 6 December 1948)^[1] is a prominent Kannada film and TV serial director, actor and screenwriter. He has become a cultural icon in Karnataka, India, through his work in several art mediums. Early life[edit]

Seetharam was born on 6 December 1948 in Thalagavara village near the Doddaballapura town in the erstwhile Mysore State. He was the third child to his parents Narayanrao and Sundaramma. He completed his high school education in Doddaballapur Municipal School, Doddaballapura, and pre-university course in National College, Bangalore. He then obtained his degree in Bachelor of Science before obtaining his Bachelor's degree in Law. This was when he decided to take keen interest in plays, having worked with playwright P. Lankesh during the time. Seetharam decided to stay in Bangalore after completing his education, by participating in plays. He rejected his father's request to return to his village and involve himself in agriculture and to practice as a lawyer. Having been influenced by Lankesh and U. R. Ananthamurthy, he believed owning a piece of land is a sin. Saddened by his decision, his father, a patient, stopped consuming medicine and died shortly thereafter leaving Seetharam with guilt. In 2014, during his appearance in the talk show Weekend with Ramesh, Seetharam said that many of his plays were made as tributes to his father and his television serials were made as tributes to women, inspired mainly by his deceased sister, Padma.^[1]

Seetharam began his career as an associate to playwright and film director, P. Lankesh. He played a pivotal role in the Lankesh directed National Award winning film Pallavi (1976). He was also associated with the famous director Puttanna Kanagal and had written scripts for his movies. He also made appearances as an actor in some movies. He was noticed when he started directing TV serials for Doordarshan. Fame and recognition came when he directed Mayamruga, a daily Kannada serial which stood apart for its take on reality. Mayamruga has seen a DVD avatar, probably a first for a Kannada serial. He then went on to direct Kamanabillu which was the first serial on a satellite TV to be watched widely His association with ETV Kannada resulted in famous serials like Manvantara and Muktha. He has acted in most of his serials and he likes to play the character of a lawyer who comes to the rescue of the oppressed.

He developed a concept of Samvada, wherein he held organised meetings with his audience throughout Karnataka. These became so popular that ETV Kannada telecasted these interactions as well.

He was the president of Karnataka State Film Awards jury for the year 2006.

It was directed by T.N. Seetharam, who also acted as a lawyer (as CSP) in the serial. The director aimed to inspire civic awareness and action with stories depicting the fight for justice even against all kinds of bureaucratic and political opposition. Muktha, a word with roots in Sanskrit, means 'reprieve'. The program ended on 12 September 2010. The main theme of this serial was to increase legal awareness among the people. In this serial, well known and renowned Kannada writer Sudha Narayana Murthy also acted as a Judge.

The serial was again started in the new name as 'Muktha Muktha' involving new characters and different geographical location. T.N. Seetharam reprises the role of CSP. In the new^[when?] serial Muktha Muktha, T.N. Seetharam explores issues such as those involving the Naxal, farmers, and the medical system. Mukta Arts Limited is an Indianfilmproduction company,^[5][3] headquartered in Mumbai,^[6] established in 1978. The company is involved in the production, distribution, exhibition and education in cinema and creative arts and production of digital software in television serials, web series and documentaries.^[7] It is the first Hindi film production company that listed on the stock exchange.^[8][9] Mukta Arts Limited has produced and co-produced 42 films in Hindi and other languages till date. It has distributed over 400 movies under the brand name Mukta movies distributors. In 2012 it entered into exhibition sector and launched its own chain of multiplex theatres under the name Mukta A2 Cinemas, now present at 18 locations in India including one in Bahrain with 54 screens.^[10][11]

The company also runs Whistling Woods International, a Film, Communication and Media Arts Institute since 2006.

On 24 October 1978 film maker Subhash Ghai set up his own film production company Mukta Films^[12] and produced a film titled Karz. In 1982, Subhash Ghai formed a new independent company as Mukta Arts Private Limited and produced and directed many movies including Hero, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Trimurti, Khalnayak, Pardes, and Taal till 2000.

In 2000, Mukta Arts Limited became first Company from the Hindi Film Industry to be listed on the stock exchanges in India.^[8][9] Subsequently, it produced commercial movies like Yaadein, Aitraaz, Kisna, 36 China Town, Yuvraaj and Apna Sapna Money Money. In 2003, it produced low budget movies under the banner of Mukta searchlight films including Iqbal, Joggers Park, Rahul and Black and White. It won a National Award for IQBAL as best film on other social issues in 2006. It also set up a division for regional movies which produced three Marathi, one Bengali, one Punjabi and one Kannada movies.^[13] It set up its own all India distribution network and released many Hindi and English movies.^[14]

Film insurance[edit]

Mukta Arts became the first Indian film production company to establish the practice of securing film insurance through its movie ‘Taal’. The policy is now named the 'Cine Mukta' Policy.^[17][18]

Whistling Woods[edit]

In 2006 Mukta Arts Ltd promoted and set up India's largest Film and Television Training Institute at Film City, Mumbai called Whistling Woods International (WWI).^[19] It is affiliated with TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) and provides Diplomas and Degrees to students in Arts and Crafts of Cinema, Animation, Music, Fashion and Management. The institute serves as a contributor and advisor to the Indian government through the Skills Ministry and the HRD Ministry.^[20]

In the exhibition sector Mukta Arts Ltd holds a chain of multiplexes across India under Mukta A2 Cinema with 18 locations and 54 screens including one in Bahrain.^[21] Mukta Arts Ltd also has a joint venture in the exhibition programming space with a 55:45 shareholding split with UFO in the company Mukta VN. Mukta A2 Cinemas has also entered into a joint venture with Asian Cinemas under name Asian Mukta A2 Cinemas LLP which operates 10 screens in South India.^[22]

Mukta Digital Studio[edit]

The digital arm of Mukta Arts Ltd is known as Mukta Digital Studio which oversees Mukta Arts group's content on television, web and various mobile platforms in production and acquisition. Mukta Digital Studio has already produced short films and music videos for Skill India, Communal Harmony, Namami gange, Kumbh India and Tree Plantation for various government departments.^[23]
